Bringing Us Together Since the Beginning

“Mawwiage, is what bwings up togevah today.” That line from the movie The Princess Bride is iconic. I couldn’t help but think of it yesterday, which was the 48th anniversary of the patriarch and matriarch of “A Legacy of Faith.” Next week, one set of Jeremiah’s grandparents will celebrate 70 years.

Last week, Jeremiah and I celebrated 20 years of marriage. In our ceremony 20 years ago, the legacy of long-lasting marriages in our family was mentioned. At that time, between all of our grandparents and parents, there was over 250 years of marriage represented. We have been very blessed by Christian examples of commitment in all of these marriages.

God knew we needed special people in our lives. He provided many avenues for those relationships –  friends, church family, physical family – but none is more special than the one He provided from the beginning. In the Genesis account of creation, we read where God had all animals come to Adam after saying it was “not good that the man should be alone” (Gen. 2:18). I think that train of animals was more for Adam’s sake – so that he would realize none of the animals measured up – based on the rest of verse 18: “I will make him a helper fit for him” (emphasis added).

God knew what we needed. He still does.

Another iconic line from the same movie is what we all need, married or not: “Love, twue love, is what bwings us togevah today.” We all need love … but not just any love. We need true love. A love that tells us the truth, not what we want to hear. A love that is a choice, not just a feeling. A love that has the ultimate goal of heaven.

And everyone, married or not, has an opportunity for that type of love in their life. I believe a strong, Christian marriage keeps that type of love at the forefront of the relationship. But, because Christ offered Himself for all of us, we can all experience this type of love through Him.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

So while I am beyond thankful for the many years of marriage in our family, I am even more thankful that those marriages were and are based on a Christ-like love with an ultimate goal of helping each other and others get to heaven.

Happy Anniversary, Dad & Mom.
