Is It the School's Job?

Mathematica Policy Research released a study saying that students who attended abstinence programs were just as likely to engage in sexual activity as those students who did not attend. Also, the median age of a child’s first sexual experience was the same: 14.9. The government spends over $150million per year on these programs. [Read a press release from Medical News Today here.]

Critics are saying that these programs are not working. That may be the case, but I believe the focus is not on the right place. Where are we told that the schools are supposed to be teaching children about abstinence?

This is simply another case of the Bible needing to be taught! Families and congregations of God’s people need to be teaching children about proper sexual behavior. This is just another reason why people need the Bible. When God’s Word is properly taught and lived, children are more likely to make right moral decisions.

I understand that not every child has good Christian parents, and I do believe that schools should be teaching proper morals, but we don’t need to say that these programs don’t work based on one study. It’s not the school’s job to teach such things–the school should be reinforcing, and there is a major difference.

May We Recommend…

Putting posts on this blog as often as we do takes quite a bit of time and effort. It is a joy to do, and we love it, but it does require some work.

We also try to keep this blog up-to-date with features. We have added another now that you will want to notice. On the right-hand side about half-way down is a new feature called “May We Recommend…”. These are books and DVDs that we enjoy and that we think you will enjoy as well.

We hope to change these out, and add to them, every so often. If one of the items is of interest to you, simply click on the ad, and it will take you to Amazon.com’s page for that item. If you decide to purchase that item, we will get a (very) small percentage of the sale because of our “referral.”

Of course, we don’t endorse everything found in all the books (except the Bible), but the books we will showcase in that section are ones that we have found interesting and helpful. The DVDs are ones that contain wholesome family entertainment–something that is very lacking in our society.

Thanks for continuing to read the blog. Use these links to find more good reading and study material, and more good family entertainment. And remember, using the links to purchase these items helps us, too!

Post Corrected

Earlier today, I posted the PowerPoint presentations for my sermons on Sunday. For those of you who saw that and only got “white space,” let me explain. The presentations were there, but the files were so large that it was taking a very long time for them to load.

To correct that, you can now read the post and click on a link that will take you to the presentations.

Sorry for the mix-up.

At least the mistake wasn’t this big:

To Catch a Predator Update

If anything has caused potential sexual predators to think twice about getting online recently, it has been Dateline NBC’s series “To Catch a Predator.”

Now there are two new developments in the series of which every parent should be aware.

First, Chris Hansen, the host of the series, has written a book documenting much of what he and the crew have seen. While I have not read the book yet, if the TV series is any indication, it will be an important book for parents, especially of young teens, to read. To order the book from Amazon, click here. To read a short excerpt posted on MSNBC, click here.

Second, MSNBC is running a review series, if you will, of the “To Catch a Predator” series. It is called “Predator Raw.” In these shows, they are revisiting some of more interesting cases and spending more time with each potential predator. In the regular series there were, tragically, so many men that only about 5 minutes could be spent showing on TV what happened. In this new series, about 10-12 minutes is spent with each man. More of their encounter with Chris Hansen is shown, and one gets a better idea as to what each man is thinking. I saw one of these late last night, and another airs tonight at 10 Eastern/9 Central.

This series is very important and has exposed a problem that is running rampant through our society. It has also helped those of us who work with young people know better some things to say to them. They need to see the severe danger that this is.

Sermons "Teasers" for Sunday

Following are links to the PowerPoint presentations for the two sermons I plan on presenting Sunday. I hope they encourage you. The website these are loaded on does not allow users to incorporate “animation” in the shows, just slide transitions.

Sunday morning’s sermon is entitled “From Every Stormy Wind.” The slides that contain word art have each verse of that song from The Paperless Hymnal in the background. I am preaching one point about the Lord’s Supper from each verse.

AM SERMON: From Every Stormy Wind

Sunday evening’s sermon is entitled “Sounding Forth.” The major points come from Willmington’s The Outline Bible, but all supplementary material is mine. The lesson is an expository sermon of First Thessalonians chapter 1. It is designed to encourage all members of the 9th Avenue family to work, but it is also meant to “fire up” our young people for Lads to Leaders Bible Bowl for 2008. The books to study are First and Second Thessalonians, First and Second Timothy and Titus. I thought by preaching this sermon, some might see that there is a lot of great material that can be learned from these books.

PM SERMON: Sounding Forth

I hope these are encouraging to you. They have been, as all sermons are, an encouragement to me in my study and preparation.
