Thank You So Much

Today is December 12th, 2006. Exactly one year ago, we added a “counter” to the right-hand side of the blog. We wanted to see if anyone (besides us) ever came to the blog. When I got on this morning to check for comments (as if there are ever any of those), the counter read 4320.

Over four thousand hits in one year. For a personal blog, we think that’s pretty good. As we have said before, we are so happy to do this. This is the 249th post in the history of the blog (about 18 months), so we average a new post about every 2 1/2 days.

We hope you continue to find the information helpful and uplifting. And we hope you tell others about the blog.

We’ll keep posting!

Do They Really Want to Make This Jump?

Scientists uncovered another set of dinosaur fossils, and have made an amazing jump as to the age of the creature. They have also made another interesting statement in regard to plesiosaur. Yahoo! reports:

In life, 70 million years ago, the five-foot-long animal would have resembled Nessie, the long-necked creature reported to inhabit Scotland’s Loch Ness.

Did you catch that?

The scientists are claiming that the creature resembles a creature that has never been proven to exist!

Now, the sad part is that they must automatically jump back 70million years to make this creature fit their teetering theory. Why? Because scientists continue to want our existence to be true without God. If He is in the picture, then they must conform to His ways.

A Good Guy "Wins"

I don’t know much about the personal life of Ladanian Tomlinson, but I like what I see on the field.

Yesterday, LT scored 3 more touchdowns to break the single-season record for total touchdowns (scored by running or catching) with 29. He also has two passing TDs which do not count on his record. The record he broke was set last year by Shaun Alexander of the Seahawks, when he scored 28. Tomlinson has three more games to destroy the record.

Besides the impressive numbers, though, is something far more important. In an age of over-the-top celebrations and players being more famous for their off-field antics, it’s good to see a guy who acts like he’s scored a touchdown before.

Watching Tomlinson play a couple of weeks ago, I saw him score his fourth touchdown in one game. Did he spike the ball? No. Did he get a prop and celebrate? No. What did he do? He tossed the ball to the back judge, patted his offensive linemen on the helmet, and jogged off.

That’s it. He’s been there before, and he’ll be there again.

In fact, when he scored TD #29 yesterday, he was ready to just jog off the field, but his teammates made him celebrate. They picked him up on their shoulders and carried him out of the endzone. He’s the kind of teammate everyone wants. No prima donna attitude. Just gritty, hard play.

It prompted his coach in his post-game press conference to say that, however good a player you think he is, he’s ten times better of a person. At that, the coach got choked up and left.

We may just be witnessing the greatest offensive player of all time play, but he doesn’t care about that. He just wants to win, and win the right way.

It’s good to see a guy like that succeed. Young athletes should take notice.

65 Years Later

Today in Hawai’i, about 500 survivors of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor will meet. The number of survivors continues to dwindle and many think this will be the last time there is a great meeting like this on a 5-year anniversary cycle. All the survivors are in their 80s or 90s.

Please do two things.

1. Be thankful. These soldiers are heros of our nation. And deservedly so. Pearl Harbor was one of the most awful events in our nation’s history, but it had a great effect. Thousands “signed up” for the opportunity to go fight for our nation in Europe and the Pacific. I am proud that both of my grandfathers served in World War II. John Turner, Sr. served in Europe before coming back to America severely injured. Delmar Faughn served as a trainer of soldiers. While he never actually went to Europe or the Pacific, hundreds of men owe their training (and probably their lives) to him for his help in preparing them.

2. Read the article that Yahoo! published about the reunion today. It contains great writing, but, more importantly, a great amount of “human-ness.” You may read it by clicking here.

Let’s not forget those who continue to fight for us all over the world today. But let’s also never forget those who have fought in the past.

Just Wondering When…

The first Muslim to serve in the United States Congress is already causing a controversy. Keith Ellison of Minnesota refused to use the Bible for his swearing in ceremony, choosing rather to use the Koran, the “holy book” of Islam.

USA Today’s Andrea Stone wrote the following article about the controversy on Friday:

The first Muslim elected to Congress hasn’t been sworn into office yet, but his act of allegiance has already been criticized by a conservative commentator.

In a column posted Tuesday on the conservative website Townhall.com, Dennis Prager blasted Minnesota Democrat Keith Ellison’s decision to take the oath of office Jan. 4 with his hand on a Quran, the Muslim holy book.

“He should not be allowed to do so,” Prager wrote, “not because of any American hostility to the Koran, but because the act undermines American culture.”

He said Ellison, a convert from Catholicism, should swear on a Christian Bible — which “America holds as its holiest book. … If you are incapable of taking an oath on that book, don’t serve in Congress.”

The post generated nearly 800 comments on Townhall.com and sparked a tempest in the conservative blogosphere. Many who posted comments called the United States a Christian country and said Muslims are beginning to gain too much influence.

Others wrote about the separation of church and state and said the Constitution protects all religions.

Dave Colling, Ellison’s spokesman, said he was unavailable for comment. Earlier, Ellison told the online Minnesota Monitor, “The Constitution guarantees for everyone to take the oath of office on whichever book they prefer. And that’s what the freedom of religion is all about.”

Colling said Ellison’s office has received hundreds of “very bigoted and racist” e-mails and phone calls since Prager’s column appeared. “The vast majority said, ‘You should resign from office if you’re not willing to use the book our country was founded on,’ ” Colling said.

“Requiring somebody to take an oath of office on a religious text that’s not his” violates the Constitution, said Kevin Hasson, president of The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty.

Members of the House of Representatives traditionally raise their right hands and are sworn in together on the floor of the chamber. The ritual sometimes seen as the swearing-in is actually a ceremonial photo op with the speaker of the House that usually involves a Bible.

“They can bring in whatever they want,” says Fred Beuttler, deputy historian of the House.

Prager, who is Jewish, wrote that no Mormon elected official has “demanded to put his hand on the Book of Mormon.” But Republican Sen. Gordon Smith of Oregon, carried a volume of Mormon scriptures that included the Bible and the Book of Mormon at his swearing-in ceremony in 1997.

Prager, who hosts a radio talk show, could not be reached for comment.

I just have one question. Besides the United States being founded upon religious principles, the founders of this nation were Christians. They built the government upon Christian principles. Now one of the men who stands on their shoulders has turned a blind eye to history. My question is, if he is allowed to use the Koran, what will the first atheist elected to congress use? Nothing?

Why can’t those who are serving the people within our country join with history and at least act as if they cared about our Christian past?
