Kermit Gosnell’s Case Was Not about Abortion?

The trial has been over for a few days, and yesterday the jury in Philadelphia convicted abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell on three counts of first degree murder and one count of involuntary manslaughter. Due to the multiple first degree murder convictions, lawyers are considering seeking the death penalty.

For some time, there was an outcry over how little attention the national media was giving this case. The details of the case were awful, and I am not going to reprint the details here (save one subtle reference later in the article), except to remind us that this man was allowing babies to be born, and then was killing them. The media, at first, claimed these sickening details as the reason the case was not being discussed. In due time, though, they could not keep from talking about the Gosnell case.

Time magazine, however, wants its readership to know that one of the “takeaways” from the case is this: “This was not a case about the morality of legal, late-term abortion.” The authors of this article go on to give this reasoning:

Gosnell’s trial was about illegal abortion and homicide. The methods Gosnell used to end the lives of the babies cited in the case against him—including snipping their necks with scissors after they were outside the womb—are medically indefensible by any measure, in any case. Prochoice advocates did not defend Gosnell or argue that the gruesome practices in his clinic were part of the sad, but real, world of legal abortion in the U.S. On the contrary, many abortion rights activists long ago called for Gosnell to be convicted of murder.

Not too surprisingly, this was the very first “takeaway” in the article. Is it any wonder why?

Those who would write these words are very sharp. They are trying to point out the awful way in which Gosnell murdered these babies. Notice, again, that the authors willingly use the word “babies,” since these were live births.

But are we really supposed to buy their pro-abortion statement that there is no connection between what Kermit Gosnell was doing and late-term abortion? Really?

Let’s see…

There is no connection since these babies were “just fetuses” a few seconds earlier?

There is no connection since some of these same instruments could be placed inside the mother to abort the child?

There is no connection in the few inches the baby traveled to be born?

There is no connection when the mother is most likely still in the room, or at least still in the building?

There is no connection since the same doctor is performing legal abortions in one room and these illegal acts in another?

There is no connection since the umbilical cord is cut instead of the spinal cord?

Really Time? You think we are that ignorant?

Kermit Gosnell’s case was a rarity, I have no doubt. But to make the claim that it had nothing to do with abortion is nothing short of irresponsible journalism and editorializing.

Why?

Because if it had nothing to do with abortion, Time magazine, why did you bring it up?

QUESTION: What are your reactions to the Kermit Gosnell case and how it was handled in the media? Share your thoughts in the comments.

President Obama’s Forgotten “S”

Yesterday, with all the usual pomp, Barak Obama was ceremonially sworn in for his second term as President of the United States. I say “ceremonially” because he was officially sworn in on Sunday, per the Constitutional provision that a President must be sworn in before noon on January 20.

His speech was quite brief,  not even reaching 20 minutes in length. However, it made headlines around the world for several things that were said.

248610834_22802eaddc_z

None hit me so hard, though, as his three “s’s” of civil rights. He stated,

We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths — that all of us are created equal — is the star that guides us still; just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall…

The first two “s’s” are easy to figure out. Seneca Falls held the famous convention where women’s suffragettes–such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton–fought for the women’s right to vote. Selma, of course, is a direct reference to the wonderful work of Martin Luther King and others in Selma, Alabama.

But what is “Stonewall?” This was a reference to Stonewall Inn, located in New York City, where riots in 1969 for gay activism were held. Police raids on openly pro-homosexual establishments were quite common, but for some reason, they could not control the crowd at this inn, and it grew into a full-fledged riot.

So, our President is equating the gay right’s movement with the movements that gained women the right to vote and that helped to bring segregation to an end. If you missed it, here is how the President followed up those words:

It is now our generation’s task to carry on what those pioneers began. For our journey is not complete until our wives, our mothers, and daughters can earn a living equal to their efforts. Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law — for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well.

Obviously, I vehemently disagree with our President on this issue. This is not a civil right’s issue, because being homosexual is not equal with one’s gender or race. Homosexuality, as outlined in Scripture, is clearly a sin.

But I want to bring something else up in this post. Our President seems to be for everyone being treated equally. He seems to present tolerance as the highest virtue. Even if you (like I) do not agree with him, we must admit that he is eloquent in his speech.

However, Barak Obama seems to have forgotten a fourth “S” to add to Seneca Falls, Selma, and Stonewall. If we are going to fight for civil rights for all these groups represented by these “S” locations, how did he forget…

…the Sonogram?

Mr. President, today is the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. So many other groups–including homosexuals–have found you to be an advocate for their civil rights. However, during your watch as our leader, thousands of people have been slaughtered, and you haven’t said so much as a single word to defend them. Since you made your speech yesterday, approximately 2000 have died. Already, more than twice as many babies have died this year through abortion (over 79,000) in the United States than live in my town of Hermitage, Tennessee (35,000), the home of one of your distinguished predecessors.

So while our President fights for everyone else’s civil rights, the most innocent among us have no advocate in the highest office. Sir, would you please add an “S” to your list? Maybe you could be the champion of the sonogram, and be remembered for something truly important.

One of these days, sir, I pray that Malia and Sasha, your beautiful daughters, are blessed with children. When you see that sonogram, my prayer is that you will see that someone needs to fight for your grandchild, even in the womb. If you don’t start that fight now, who will?

Planned Parenthood and Our Tax Request

In 2012, the organization Planned Parenthood received a record-high amount of federal money, provided from tax payers. The amount, which was over $500,000,000, was the most the organization had ever received from the federal government, and was an 11% increase over 2011.

6984657584_561f45afca_zOf course, this group is most well-known for being quite ironically named. In reality, the group should be called “Planned Unparenthood,” since they provide more abortions than any other organization in our nation. Our family vehemently disagrees with the money we are managing for God being used to fund such actions.

So, on our 2012 tax return, we are going to say something. Now, we fully intend to pay the taxes we owe, and we also fully recognize that the government has every right to use the monies they take in through taxes as they choose. We are not going to shirk our responsibility as citizens to pay taxes, nor to submit to the authority of the governing powers.

However, we also have the right, both from God and our Bill of Rights, to peacefully protest against this use of the money.

So, along with our tax return this year, there will be a short note to the IRS. Here is what it says:

Per our First Amendment right to peaceful protest, we humbly request that no part of our tax income be used to fund Planned Parenthood. We make this request based upon both religious and conscience issues concerning the organization’s promotion of, and performing of, abortions. This protest is in no way a threat to the government, nor to Planned Parenthood. We thank you for considering this request.

As you can see, we think this befits the attitude and actions of a Christian, while making a simple request from our government.

Here is my question: could this become something many of us do? In the comments, let us know if you will join us in this peaceful protest.

Mini-Post: Link to New York Times

Siri, Apple’s voice-recognition system, has come under fire. The reason is just one more way to show how far the pro-choice crowd is willing to go.

Friday Links Roundup: Missionary Weekend Edition

This weekend at Lebanon Road is going to be very special. We are having a Missions Weekend. We had one of these two years ago, and we would like to do continue doing this about every other year.

Lebanon Road supports 8 full-time missionaries (plus some other works). On this weekend, all eight of these missionaries and their families will be with us for a series of events. There will be meals, meetings with our elders, trips to Christian bookstores, and worship together on Sunday. Our missions committee deserves a great deal of thanks for piecing this together and keeping in contact with our missionaries to make sure all their schedules could allow for this.

For our Lebanon Road folks, don’t forget that all 8 missionaries will be speaking in various Bible classes on Sunday morning. A great way to show them your support is to make that extra effort to attend a class.

On to the links for this week:

1. There are a few video games I like (I always was a fan of SimCity), but I don’t have a console, and don’t really like to play games for hours on end. Cindy Colley shares some important thoughts for our parents on the idea of video game addiction in her post “Video Games: The Next Level Could be Dangerous.”

2. Study Your Bible Online mentioned a great hymn this week and made some great points about the Biblical basis for what we sing. Since we are obviously fans of hymns (see the “hymns” tab above), this post meant a lot to us. Enjoy “Theology of the Song ‘In Christ Alone’.”

3 & 4. FoxNews.com published a story this week stating that some researchers in Boston were showing great strides in using adult stem cells to possibly treat certain diseases. Here is that story. Of course, study after study has shown that embryonic stem cells don’t work (and of course, they destroy human life), so stories like this one are important. For more on the difference in these two types of cells, read this open letter from Brad Harrub to a US Senator.

We hope you have a great weekend. Please continue to pray that our “index card challenge” at Lebanon Road will be a success. I have already heard from some folks who have said open doors have been there and they have had the courage to “walk through.” That is so exciting!!! To God be the glory.

Make sure you give Him glory every day, but especially on His day.
